Purpose | |
The Developing Effective Bilingual Educators with Resources (DEBER) Project at SDSU empowers future bilingual educators through resources, mentorship, and culturally sustaining pedagogies. As California faces a critical bilingual teacher shortage, DEBER aims to address this gap by equipping a new generation of educators who are prepared to teach in diverse, multilingual classrooms. While the initiative strongly supports Spanish and English bilingualism, it also expands its vision to include Mandarin and paves the way for emerging language pathways such as Arabic, Tagalog, and others. As a student-led initiative, the DEBER Club will serve as a collaborative space where aspiring bilingual educators, especially transfer students, can deepen their understanding of educational equity, engage with critical dialogue, and support one another through shared experiences. The club is especially attentive to the needs of students navigating transfer pathways, first-generation college journeys, and bilingual or bicultural identities.
